How to Create the Ideal, Functional Home Office
More people are working from home today than ever before. Yet, working from the comfort of your home isn’t always simple. You need to have the right space to ensure you can focus on the task at hand and have everything you need within reach to be successful. What does it take to have a functional home office?
Choose the Best Location
When selecting a location for your home office, consider the tasks you’ll complete there. Placing your business by an exterior door is important if you need to greet clients. If not, it may be better to move it away from distractions. The location may be limited to the options in your home but think creatively or consider building on an addition.
What Type of Work Will You Do?
The type of work you do will ultimately determine the features and layout of your home office. For example, if you need large workspaces and tables, you’ll need a large office to incorporate this. Do you need a formal desk and sitting space for clients? You may also be spending time on the phone, which could create a need for a bit of soundproofing for the office. Do you need a fax machine, a copier or a printer? If so, will you need to print large documents or will a small, desk-size printer and fax combination be sufficient?
The Tech Focus
Sometimes, we also need to consider the value of technology and how that impacts the design of a home office. Do you plan to make video calls to your clients? If so, you’ll need to have dedicated connectivity that doesn’t cut off. If your office is tucked into a basement, that may make it hard to maintain a proper signal. Plan for this during your design process.
What’s Your View?
As you consider your office space, remember that this is a place you’ll be spending a lot of your time. You need a view. Can you glance out and see a garden area? Perhaps there is a view of the rolling hills in the background. The key here is to make your space feel good to you. That office without a window isn’t going to be motivational to you. You may even find yourself looking for reasons to leave it. Instead, make it a space that you love to spend time in.
