Popular Trends in Countertop Materials
If you are starting a home remodel project, or building a new home, one of the many decisions you will have to make is what countertop material to use in your kitchen. Most people are familiar with the materials that are commonly used for countertops, such as porcelain tiles, granite, marble and quartz. If you are looking to make a statement, you may want to go with a material that is not as commonly used but is still trendy and functional. Here are a few of the lesser-known countertop materials that are starting to become popular in kitchens.
Soapstone
Soapstone is a natural stone material, just like granite and marble. It is typically dark gray to black in color, so it pairs well with lighter kitchens. This material has traditionally been used in older or historic homes. However, it has been reemerging lately and is becoming an alternative to granite. Unlike granite, soapstone is non-porous, so it doesn’t stain as easy and is very easy to clean. The downside is that soapstone is slightly softer than granite and marble, so you should never cut on it.
Laminate
Laminate countertops have been around for decades, and unfortunately, they have gotten a bad reputation. The laminate countertops that are produced today are of a higher quality than those produced in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Today, many laminate countertops can perfectly replicate the look of more expensive materials, including granite, marble and quartz. If you are looking to keep your budget low, laminate may be perfect for your countertops. However, keep in mind that laminate countertops do not have a great return on investment.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel countertops are surging in popularity. Metal is becoming an extremely popular material for those who love modern-looking spaces or industrialized-looking spaces. Stainless steel works with any color scheme, is easy to clean and does not inhibit the growth of bacteria. The downside to stainless steel countertops is that they scratch and dent easily, and they easily show smudges and fingerprints.
Glass
Glass countertops are a trendy countertop material because they have a modern and sleek look to them. Glass can be cut into any shape, so you can ensure that your countertop fits perfectly within your space. Glass is also extremely easy to clean, and it reflects light, making a small kitchen look larger. The downside to glass is that it can chip or break if you are not careful around it.
